The Vactor Ramjet is a high-performance truck-mounted jetter for contractors needing powerful water jetting with vacuum recovery and operational flexibility. Some Vactor combination cleaner configurations can be adapted for light hydro excavation, but for dedicated hydrovac work — utility locating, potholing, slot trenching — a purpose-built TRUVAC is recommended. Vertidrive robotic crawlers are remotely controlled units for inspecting, cleaning, and rehabilitating pipes and confined spaces without operators entering hazardous environments — used in sewer inspection, industrial pipe work, and tank cleaning. Gerotto robotic systems specialize in sewer rehabilitation tasks including cutting, milling, and in-pipe repair operations. Both brands are available through JJE for municipalities and contractors operating advanced infrastructure programs.

Hydro excavation (also called hydrovac or vacuum excavation) uses pressurized water to break up and liquefy soil while a powerful vacuum simultaneously removes the slurry into an onboard debris tank. This method exposes underground utilities, pipes, and infrastructure with far less risk of damage than mechanical digging and is the preferred safe-digging method in areas with buried utilities.

Potholing (daylighting) is creating a small, precise test hole to visually expose an underground utility before excavation begins. A hydrovac is the preferred tool because it excavates with precision, avoids striking buried cables, pipes, or conduits, and creates a clean, controllable hole without mechanical damage risk. Many jurisdictions now require or strongly recommend hydrovac potholing before any mechanical digging near buried infrastructure.

Hydrovac equipment is used by municipalities (utility repairs, infrastructure installations); oil & gas (pipeline exposure in sensitive areas); telecom & utilities (fiber, cable, conduit installation); construction (foundation work near existing services); mining (slurry handling, confined space excavation); and environmental companies (contaminated soil removal in sensitive areas).

Yes. TRUVAC hydrovacs can be equipped with heated water systems that allow operation in cold and frozen ground. Heated water thaws frozen soil to facilitate excavation even in winter — a critical advantage for Canadian and northern U.S. operations. Hydro excavation uses pressurized water to break up soil and vacuum to remove slurry. It is highly effective in most soil types including clay and compacted soils, and is the most widely used non-destructive digging method.

Air excavation uses compressed air instead of water — advantageous in dry, sandy, or loose soil where you want to keep excavated material dry for reuse as backfill, or when working near live electrical connections that must be kept dry. Rear loaders collect waste from containers placed at the rear of the truck — operated with a crew (manual) or automated with a cart tipper. They handle a wide variety of container sizes and loose waste.

Guzzler trucks are designed for industrial vacuum applications — collecting dry and wet industrial waste, cleaning tanks and vessels, recovering fly ash, and handling hazardous materials. They are industrial cleaning tools, not digging tools.

TRUVAC hydrovacs are designed specifically for non-destructive excavation — using pressurized water to break up soil and vacuum it away to expose buried utilities.
